Why your body isn't broken


A gentle, science‑informed reminder for anyone who feels like their body is letting them down

People often walk into the clinic and say, “My body is broken.” I hear it every week, but the truth is, your body is working.


Your body isn’t broken. It’s responding exactly as it was designed to, based on the situation it’s in.


Your body is constantly processing information, thi can be: stress, load, movement history, sleep, emotions, past injuries and experiences, and it is using this information to make decisions to keep you safe. It’s not failing. It’s adapting. Your Body Protects You Even When It Feels Uncomfortable.


When a joint (like your shoulder, hip, or lower back) loses some of its range of motion, due to injury, a long day at work, stress, or simply not moving much, your body steps in to protect you.

It normally does this by tightening the muscles around the area.

This isn’t a mistake. It’s your body saying:

  • “This area feels vulnerable.”

  • “Let me stabilise it.”

  • “Let’s reduce movement until we know it’s safe.”


Those tight muscles can cause pain. But pain is a message, not a sign of damage.

Pain Is Your Body Talking, Not Breaking

Pain can come from many places in the body, and it’s always a form of communication.

Your body might be saying:

  • “You’re injured, please take care.”

  • “We haven’t moved like this for a while, are you sure it is safe?”

  • “Last time we did this, we got hurt, so I’m being cautious.”

None of these messages means your body is broken. They mean your body is doing its job.

Pain is a protection system, a warning light, a request for attention, like the lights on the car dashbaord, it is not a diagnosis.



Stress Changes the Body Too

This protective response isn’t just physical — it’s deeply connected to your nervous system.

When life becomes overwhelming, your body reacts:

  • muscles tighten

  • breathing becomes shallow

  • posture shifts

  • movement reduces

  • everything becomes a little more guarded

Your body is preparing you for danger — even if the “danger” is just a stressful week, not a sabre‑tooth tiger chasing you down the high street.

This is biology, not failure.


Your Body Wants to Feel Safe

Your body doesn’t need perfection. It needs safety, reassurance, and small, consistent movement.

You can help by:

  • moving gently

  • breathing fully into the lungs

  • giving your body variety

  • reminding your nervous system that you’re safe

These small actions create big changes over time.
