I Hurt My Back Loading the Dishwasher. Why It Happens and How to Help It
It’s one of those everyday things we’ve all done. You’re loading or unloading the dishwasher, standing slightly “not quite right”, twisting to grab a plate, or moving quickly to avoid the dog, and suddenly your back goes.
In clinic, I see a few people every month who’ve hurt their back doing exactly this. It’s surprisingly common, and usually not a sign of anything serious, but it can be very painful in the moment.
The Mechanism Behind the Injury
Most dishwasher‑related back pain comes from a simple combination of bending, lifting, and twisting at the same time.
That moment when you:
Pick up a plate
Rotate to place it in the dishwasher
And your spine says “nope”
This can trigger:
A sudden muscle spasm in the lower back
Sharp, acute pain
A feeling of being “stuck” or unable to straighten up
It’s dramatic, but usually short‑lived. Your body is just trying to protect you.
When to Pay Attention to Red Flags
Most cases are simple muscle spasm. But if you experience any of the following, please seek medical advice:
Tingling, numbness, or pins and needles down both legs
Numbness in the saddle area
Changes to bowel or bladder habits
Loss of strength in the legs
What You Can Do to Help Right Now
If none of the red flags apply to you then:
Gentle movement, small and slow. You can also move with the breath to help further calm the nervous system
Heat, to sooth tight muscles
Short walks
Avoid long periods of not moving
What You Can Do in The Future
Squats, bending those knees. Will not only build some strength in your body, but will also enable you to lower yourself down to the dishwasher.
Avoid lifting and twisting at the same time
Turn your whole body instead of twisting through the spine.
